The Biomedical Master's Program offers a comprehensive network of support for students. This approach includes an Academic Advisor, a Professional Coach, and an Alumni Mentor. Our approach helps students succeed academically and fosters their well-being and personal growth.
Academic Advisor
Each student is paired with a faculty advisor. Advisors help students navigate their academic journey by guiding course selection, degree requirements, and academic planning. Students typically meet with their advisor once or twice a semester.
Professional Coach
Each student is also paired with a certified coach. Coaches help students look toward their preferred future and achieve individual goals. Students typically meet with their coach once or twice a month depending on student preferences. See below for more coaching information.
Alumni Mentor
Each student has the option of working with an alumni mentor. This program is a student-led initiative where BMP alumni facilitate the activities. Current students are paired with an alumni and together, they determine how often they want to meet. Alumni and current students often choose to exchange emails and/or text messages. An Alumni Mentor offers a student perspective of what it may be like to move successfully through the BMP.
Coaching
Professional Coaching is unique and distinct from advising and mentoring. The goal of coaching as applied in the Biomedical Master’s Program is to support a developmental process whereby an individual learner meets regularly over time with a professionally trained coach to… create goals, identify strategies to manage existing and potential challenges, improve academic performance, and further professional identity development toward reaching the learner's highest potential.
Professional Coaches undergo extensive training and certification. Coaching sessions are confidential, and coaches do not evaluate student performance. Each student harnesses the capacity to excel, and coaching is an avenue to unlock potential and enhance success. Student-coach partnerships encourage students to access their knowledge, grow in confidence, and identify how to bring their values, skills, and interests into their future careers.
Working with a Professional Coach can also provide clarity when facing tough decisions and overcoming challenges. This student-centered approach acknowledges that each student brings their own lived experience to their time at the BMP. Students are empowered to catalyze positive change in themselves, the community, and the world.
BMP Professional Coaches meet monthly for continued professional development, learning, and collaboration.
