I attended medical school in Lima, Peru, and moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in Physics/Biophysics at the University of Virginia. I joined Pitt in 1991 and I am currently an Associate Professor of Pharmacology & Chemical Biology. I am also co-director of the Molecular Pharmacology Training Program of the University of Pittsburgh.
My teaching concentrates on graduate education, with a special focus on Physical Biochemistry and Cell Signaling. I also participate as a facilitator in problem-based learning activities for medical students. I have mentored many undergraduates, PhD and medical students. I have received mentoring awards from the Medical Scientist Training Program (2009) and the Biomedical Graduate Student Association (2012 and 2013) of the University of Pittsburgh.

I have authored or co-authored over 90 publications on various aspects of signal transduction, with emphasis on the mechanistic analysis of the traffic and function of G-protein coupled receptors. My lab also specializes in the design and implementation of optical imaging techniques to study complex biological processes in single cells.
